Originally the Zetland, a luxurious hotel opened in 1863, this Victorian building remains the most prominent feature of Saltburn-by-the-Sea, taking its name from the Earl of Zetland, who sold the land on which to develop the town.
The Grand Terrace has some of the best views along the whole Yorkshire coastline, looking across the bay of Saltburn to Huntcliff and out to sea. You get a feeling of grandeur and olden day luxury as you make your way up the sweeping stone steps to the apartment. The terrace wraps itself around the exterior, making a perfect spot to sit and relax with a drink and watch the waves roll in and out again. Take in the views on a stroll along the promenade and at the top of the cliff, you can travel in style to both the promenade and the pier by using the oldest operating water-balance cliff lift in the country! Saltburn is a surfer’s paradise and no matter what the season, you will see figures out at sea riding the waves. Nearby, you will find a local surf school where you can have lessons and hire equipment so you can join in the fun.
A popular inn along the beach is still famous for its link to pirates and smugglers, and you can get a feel for this as you walk the beach and admire the cliffs that surround the bay. Along the Heritage Coastline there are beautiful beaches, picturesque villages and wonderful scenic walks. Staithes, Whitby and Robin Hood’s Bay are all just a short drive away, and for keen walkers, you can follow the Cleveland Way along the cliff tops.
