Positive: This trip back to the UK was about one thing: getting home to Brum to celebrate my sister’s 50th. With Mum living in Solihull, I wanted somewhere close enough to be useful, but far enough out to actually switch off. Lapworth felt like the right call. Years ago I used to come here for work dinners at The Boot and it always stuck in my mind as one of those proper English villages that quietly gets under your skin. When I found 1 Kingswood Cottage, I thought, yeah, that’ll be nice. Nice was a massive understatement. From the outside, it’s exactly what you want it to be: a picture-perfect traditional cottage. The kind of place you half expect to see on a biscuit tin. But step inside and it completely flips the script. All the modern comforts are there, done properly, without ripping the soul out of the place. Old-school charm, but with heating that actually works and a kitchen that doesn’t belong in 1983. It was the perfect size for a dad travelling solo. No wasted space, no echoey rooms, just a place that immediately felt like home. After cold December days bouncing between family catch-ups and trips down memory lane, coming back, lighting the fire, and sorting dinner was pure magic. The kind of calm you don’t realise you’ve been missing until you get it back. The location was another quiet win. Having the train nearby meant I didn’t have to drive every day, which made the whole stay feel lighter and less rushed. Pop out, do what needed doing, then retreat back to the cottage and exhale. Five days genuinely wasn’t enough. That’s probably the biggest compliment I can give it. It didn’t feel like accommodation, it felt like my place for the week. And honestly, I’m not sure I can ever go back to booking a standard hotel when I head home from New Zealand again. This has ruined me, in the best possible way. If you’re after somewhere with character, comfort, and that rare ability to make you slow down without trying too hard, 1 Kingswood Cottage is an absolute gem.

Negative: If I’m being properly picky and I mean properly, the front door had a habit of jamming now and then. On a couple of occasions I had to use the letterbox to pull it open, which felt less like a flaw and more like I was fully committing to the British cottage experience. Honestly, it didn’t detract from the stay at all. If anything, it added a bit of old-school charm and a reminder that this is a real, lived-in place with character, not a soulless hotel room with an access card that beeps at you. If that’s the worst thing I can come up with, I reckon the cottage is doing just fine.
